Addressing

Civic Addressing Information (excludes Alexander)

Signs at the end of driveways in the RM of Whitehead help people find houses and buildings. These signs have numbers that follow special rules.

Roads that run east/west are named by how far they are from the Canada-U.S. border. For example, the road at the south end of the RM is 48 miles north of the border, so it's called Road 48N. The next road north is Road 49N, and so on.

Roads that run north/south are named by how far they are from the Principal Meridian. The road at the east end of the RM is 114 miles west of this line, so it's called Road 114W. The next road west is Road 115W, and so on.

House numbers are based on two things:

  1. The "mile" of the road segment (like between Road 129W and Road 130W is Mile 129).
  2. How far the driveway is along that road segment.

For example:

  • 130131 Road 49N: This house is on Road 49N, 1310 meters west of Road 130W. The first part of the number "130" is the mile, and "131" is the distance along the road.
  • 54084 Road 116W: This house is on Road 116W, 840 meters north of Road 54. The first part "54" is the mile, and "084" is the distance along the road.

Even and odd numbers:

  • On east/west roads, houses on the south side have even numbers, and houses on the north side have odd numbers.
  • On north/south roads, houses on the west side have even numbers, and houses on the east side have odd numbers.

This system is designed for emergency responders like fire, police, and ambulance to find places quickly, even if they don't know the area well.

Your house number is on your Property Tax Invoice. Memorize it and keep it handy in case of emergencies.

The RM provides the initial sign and install whereafter it is the property owners responsibility to replace. Replacement signs can be purchased through the office at cost.
